How to Know When to Replace Your Toner Cartridge

The most obvious sign is a printer message telling you toner is low or empty — but by the time text starts looking pale, faded, or has visible white streaks running through it, you're usually already past that point and printing on fumes.

A quick way to check: pull the cartridge out and gently shake it side to side, then reinsert it. If print quality improves for a few more pages before fading again, that confirms it's genuinely low on toner rather than a different issue — buy a replacement.

Watch out for problems that look like a toner issue but aren't. Vertical streaks or repeating marks at a regular interval down the page usually mean the drum unit is worn or scratched, not the toner. Smudging that rubs off easily, rather than being properly fused into the paper, often points to the fuser unit instead. Replacing toner won't fix either of those — you'll just be buying a new cartridge for a problem it can't solve.

If you're not sure which part is actually at fault, bring in a sample printout when you order — our team can usually tell from the print pattern whether you need toner, a drum, or a technician visit instead.
